Music at Stowmarket High School is accessible to all. All students learn guitar, drums and keyboard in Year 9 in a range of group and class activities which also incorporate singing, music technology and music theory.
Music can be studied at GCSE level with a programme of study to suit all abilities and interests including music technology modules for those students who do not wish to play a traditional instrument. This GCSE leads directly on to our Music and Music Technology A-levels.
Peripatetic lessons offered by Suffolk County Music Service are available and are subsidised by the school. Piano lessons are offered outside of the County Music Service.
The department is incredibly well-resourced with two suites of computers, one of which is fully portable. We have a digital recording studio with a range of microphones for both live and studio recording. Samba and African drum sets, guitars and practice rooms equipped with keyboards and amps offer students flexibility and choice when learning.
Key Stage 3
All students learn a variety of instruments including guitar, drums, bass and keyboard through a diverse programme of study. The emphasis throughout is on practical music-making with students working on their own, in small groups and as a whole class. Singing, music theory and analysis support learning in each project.
