Option Pathways

Advice and Guidance for Key Stage 4 Options - making the right choices for you.

Choosing the subjects you wish to take for GCSE can be a difficult one.  We aim to support our students through this process by working with them in the following ways;

  •  Bespoke and specific PSHE lessons to help our students understand all the pathways available to them
  • Assemblies to guide them through the process of option choices
  • Options evening for students and parents to attend (this will include subject staff giving advice but also local colleges and businesses)

Option Choices

The pathway a student follows will dictate how many options they are able to take. Below is a brief summary of the 3 pathways students at Stowmarket follow and the options they will have :

Pathway 1

This Pathway is designed for the more academically able students and will allow them access to the English Baccalaureate. Beside English, Maths, Triple Science, non GCSE PE and Religious Studies, you can take four courses of your choice, one from each block.

There are four different options blocks as follows:

  • Option Block L - Languages        • Option Block H – Humanities

  • Option Block A – Free Blocks      • Option Block B – Free Blocks

You will choose one course from each block and a reserve choice, which should be a subject you would still like to study if you do not get your first choice in an option block. In the Languages block you can choose between French or German. In the humanities block you can choose between Geography and History.

Pathway 2

Most of our students will follow this Pathway. Beside English, Maths, Science, non GCSE PE and Religious Studies, you can take four courses of your choice, one from each block

There are four different options blocks as follows:

  • Option Block A     • Option Block B     • Option Block C    • Option Block D

You will choose one course from each block and a reserve choice, which should be a subject you would still like to study if you do not get your first choice.

Pathway 3

This is a bespoke pathway for a small number of our students and will give them the opportunity to select an alternative curriculum that best suits their needs. This will involve individual discussions with members of the school’s senior leadership team.

 Important dates in the process
